Severn Stars Netball Captain Visits Kidderminster School
Kidderminster’s Holy Trinity School was delighted to welcome from the world of netball, Laura Malcolm, the Severn Stars Captain who joined them to lead a student coaching session.
The school’s PE teacher, Miss Dani-elle Gunn, who has close links with University of Worcester and the Institute of Sport commented: “Based at the Worcester Arena, this is the Severn Stars first season playing for the VSNL (Vitality Netball Superleague) as a new super league netball team.
“Laura’s visit to Holy Trinity provided the girls with a very informative and motivational coaching session, as well as a memory that will stay with them for a lifetime. The girls show high commitment which is resulting in their netball success.”
Coaching over 70 students from both Prep and Senior Schools, Laura's session focused on keeping control of the ball and how to avoid match mistakes, with the girls highly engaged throughout the afternoon. Students have the opportunity to attend regular Severn Stars Home games, as well as take part and assist as ball girls.
Year 9 HTS student Tamzin Worton commented: “I thought it was an amazing experience that I will always think of when playing netball matches and challenging myself to get to her level of netball."
Lucy Bailey also a Year 9 student said: “It was really interesting to learn about her skills and the position we played especially because I am centre; she’s someone I aspire to be like.”
The School’s links with the Severn Stars club helps build and sustain student motivation and enthusiasm for the game as they regularly get the chance to watch matches played at a high level, in addition to being taught by the players, which helps take netball coaching sessions to another level.
Miss Gunn added: “The afternoon was extremely inspirational and Laura is someone the girls can aspire to be like. I think it’s fantastic Severn Stars are linking with the community in such a great way and I can only see netball developing even further.”
